Plant Based Super Foods

Plant Based Superfoods I Actually Eat Every Week (And Why They Work)

July 23, 20264 min read

You don't need 20 different supplements and a cabinet full of powders to start feeling good in your own body. Honestly, most days I'm rotating through the same 5 or 6 Super foods to get in that extra boost of nutrition — they're just really, really good ones.

If you're new to plant-based eating, or you've been vegan for some time but want to eat a little more intentionally, this is a list you want to pay attention to. No jargon, no diet culture nonsense — just real whole foods that definitely pull their weight.

In this blog I’ll be going to over over 5 Plant-Based Super Foods I actually eat every week (and why they work)

Do you have my Plant Based Total Wellness Guide yet? It goes through all of the plant-based foods you should be eating to be your healthiest and fittest.

Number One is Chia Seeds. Tiny, but they DO NOT play

2 tablespoons of chia seeds packs about 5g of protein, 10g of fiber, and a solid dose of omega-3s. That's basically a snack-sized nutrition bomb.

I throw them in overnight oats, smoothies, even yogurt — they turn into this little gel texture that helps keep you fuller longer, which is super helpful for managing your weight. If you're someone who's hungry an hour after breakfast, this is a great little fix.

The Second is Spirulina - yeah, it's pretty strange...but stick with me

Spirulina is a blue-green algae (I know, it sounds pretty gnarly) — but a single tablespoon has around 4g of protein and covers a good chunk of your daily iron. It also contains ALL NINE of the essential amino acids our bodies don’t produce on its own.

I’m not going to lie…I still can’t get used to the taste of it. You can blend it into a smoothie with a bunch of fruit to try and mask the “pond water” taste, but it’s still pretty potent if you ask me.

I think the best option is getting it as a vitamin or in tablet form.

Third is Quinoa - the rice swap that helps keep you full

Quinoa ALSO contains all 9 essential amino acids, which is a big deal for a plant food (and much more enjoyable than spirulina 😉) — just remember that most plant foods don’t contain all nine. One cup cooked gives you about 8g of protein and 5g of fiber.

Swap it in anywhere you'd use rice or pasta. You can even mix it in with a salad.

I’ve actually had really great results with building lean muscle mass incorporating this into my daily meals.

Fourth up is Berries - cheap, easy, does tons of work

Blueberries, strawberries, acai…whatever's in season — berries are loaded with antioxidants that help your body fight off everyday stress and inflammation. Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive to count.

Toss a handful in your oatmeal, blend them into a smoothie, or just eat them straight out of the container standing at your fridge. You know, whatever tickles your fancy

And Fifth would be Kale - YUP, they weren't lying about this one

Everyone knows it's super healthy...but I don't really think anyone knows why! One cup of raw kale gives you your daily dose of vitamin K (bone health), plus a big hit of vitamins A (immunity and cell growth) and C (collagen production and iron absorption).

If you’re not a fan of the taste (like I’m not) try mixing it into a salad with a leafy green you enjoy. Or you can add it to a smoothie, you won't taste it as much if it’s fruit heavy (my go-to is pineapple). Another option is to bake it into chips if you want something crunchy.

The Real takeaway

You don't need to overhaul your whole diet overnight. Just start off by making some small swaps — rice for quinoa, your usual bland bowl of cereal or oatmeal for one with some blueberries or strawberries in it. Whatever feels doable and easy this week. These small changes start to stack up fast.
